BACKSP!N is a charitable art exhibition hosted by Pim-Pam creative for The Drumchapel Table Tennis Club.
Stckmn, along with 60 other designers, artists and illustrators from across the UK were asked to contribute a table tennis paddle design, that would be sold as part of a 1-week silent auction, with all proceeds going to The DTTC.
Each participant was provided with a blank wooden table tennis paddle and asked to interpret a vision for their paddle design, using one of the following words, Character / Movement / Community.
Choosing Movement as the theme, I created the piece 'Ping | Pong'. Two words, Two players, Two sides. Using angled balsa wood as a triangulated surface, a 'lenticular' style split image was created that would allow for the paddle to be angled revealing the words 'Ping' and 'Pong'.
I wanted to incorporate an interactive element to the piece that would encourage the viewer to position themselves left then right to see the words changes from Ping to Pong. By doing so they would mirror the motion of that of a player / ball, moving from left to right, typically seen during a table tennis match.
In addition to the paddle creation, a short film was produced, documenting the making of the paddle in a behind-the-scenes style look at the construction from start to finish.
